Adventures don’t have to be far away to be real.
Some of the best ones are hiding right around the corner from where you’ve always been.
For children:
Try this adventure challenge:
Make a map of your local area - draw it by hand, with your home in the middle.
Add five places you’ve never been or never explored properly.
Go to one this week - a trail, a hill, a building, a park you’ve never walked all the way around.
Bring something back - a feather, a leaf, a pebble, a photograph, a drawing - and add it to your map.
By the end of the summer, your map will be full of real adventures. Right where you live.
For grown-ups:
This week, try:
Asking your local library about hidden gems nearby - librarians are an extraordinary resource for local knowledge.
Searching beyond the first page of “things to do near [your town]” - the less obvious suggestions are often the best ones.
Looking up local walking routes - most councils offer free printed or downloadable trail maps.
Making the map together - drawing it by hand makes the discoveries feel like genuine exploration rather than an organised activity.
Going somewhere for yourself too - not just for the children, but because curiosity and wonder are good for you as well.
🌱 A grounding moment - try this outside
Find somewhere outside this week - even just your garden or a nearby green space.
Stand still for two whole minutes.
Look up. Look around. Look down.
Name five things you haven’t noticed before.
The world near you is bigger than you think. 🫶
