Hello, kind grown-up,
Children often experience emotions in layers.
Joy can sit beside sadness.
Relief can sit beside fear.
Pride can sit beside doubt.
And when this happens, it can feel confusing — for everyone.
We sometimes try to help by asking children to choose:
“Are you happy or sad?”
“Which one is it?”
But here’s the gentle truth:
Feelings are not tidy.
When we allow children to hold more than one emotion at once, we teach them something powerful:
Their inner world doesn’t need simplifying to be accepted.
You might try saying:
“That makes sense.”
“Both things can be true.”
“There’s room for all of it.”
And then letting that be enough.
Children don’t need their feelings sorted.
They need them welcomed.
