Hello, kind grown-up.
Some children will tell you when something feels hard. They’ll find the words, come to find you, and let it out.
Others carry it quietly.
They smile. They carry on. They seem completely fine.
And all the while, the bag is getting heavier.
Children often stay silent because they don’t want to upset anyone, feel like a burden, or seem like they’re being difficult. So they hold it in — and the holding takes enormous energy.
What they need most isn’t solutions. It’s permission.
Permission to share. Permission to need support. Permission to put some of the weight down.
You might try saying something simple:
“You don’t have to carry that by yourself.” “We can think about it together.” “I’m really glad you told me.”
Children feel safest when they know support is available before they’re desperate for it. You don’t need to fix anything. Sometimes the greatest gift is simply saying: I’ve got you. We can carry this together.
