Hello kind grown-up,
There is a particular kind of holiday magic that doesn’t require a suitcase.
It requires only a slightly different way of looking at the place you already live.
Most of us - however long we’ve lived somewhere - have a surprisingly small mental map of our immediate area. We know the routes we use regularly. The places habit has taken us. The same park, the same high street, the same familiar loop.
And just beyond the edges of that familiar map, often no more than fifteen or twenty minutes away, there are places we’ve never been. Views we’ve never seen. Trails we’ve never followed to the end. Small local histories waiting quietly to be discovered.
The summer holidays are a rare and genuinely lovely opportunity to explore them - together, slowly, without an agenda.
Why this matters for children:
Local exploration builds something subtle but important: a sense of belonging to a place. When children know the hill with the view, the path through the nature reserve, the old building with the interesting story - they develop a relationship with where they live that goes beyond simply existing there. They feel at home in a deeper way.
It also builds confidence. The child who has navigated a muddy path, found the right spot for a view, or followed a map to somewhere new has had a genuine small adventure - and knows it.
Practical ideas to get started:
Ask a local librarian - they often know the area’s hidden gems better than anyone.
Search “things to do near [your town]” and follow the results past the first page, where the less obvious suggestions tend to live.
Look up your local council’s walking routes - most areas have free printed or downloadable maps of local trails.
Ask an older neighbour or family member what the area used to be like, and whether there are places worth visiting that people have forgotten about.
Make a physical map together - drawing it by hand makes the discoveries feel more like real exploration.
You don’t need to go far.
You just need to look a little more carefully at where you already are.
With warmth,
Lenny 🦁
