Hello kind grown-up,
There are moments when a child says:
“I don’t know.”
“I’m not sure.”
“I can’t explain it.”
And it can feel unsettling.
We often want to help them find the words — quickly — so things feel clearer and calmer.
But here’s something gentle to hold:
Not knowing is part of emotional safety.
Children don’t always have language for what they feel — especially when emotions are new, layered, or still forming.
When we allow “I don’t know” to exist without pressure, we teach them something powerful:
Their inner world doesn’t need to perform to be accepted.
You might try responding with:
“That’s okay.”
“We can wait.”
“You don’t have to explain.”
And then staying close.
Clarity grows best in safety — not urgency.
